Employers are half the equation, so they can do a lot, and with the changing times, they'll have to starting thinking about doing more, or rather being more creative themselves. It's one thing hiring creative people, and it's another providing for those individuals.

Still, there's no U-turns on the road of reality, which tends to be straight even if we don't think so. Sometimes grunt work is just what's required. This is the other half of the paying your dues where the employee can make a big difference for them self, and as you can see in some of the links to studies on happiness at your blog Penelope, we tend to make our own happiness.

Dirty work for one person might not be so to another. Heck, I find some satisfaction from doing work no one else wants to do with its win-win setup. Simply finding a way to fairly divide less desirable work and not just dumping it one one or a few people, or finding that win-win scenario is a major part of bad work. I like Alex's writing at The Chief Happiness Officer for expanding on that topic specifically, and a change of perspective goes a long ways in thinking your doing dirty work and just paying dues, or helping others and finding happiness from that.

Hi, Matthew. Thanks for linking to Brazen Careerist. And thank you for taking the discussion of paying ones dues one step further. You're right that employers can do a lot to solve the problem. They can hire employees who are qualified to produce results on day one. Everyone would be happier. Of course, there are cases where jobs are so specific that they really do require grunt-level training. But employers should work hard to get rid of that kind of work. A lot of times you can change a process to improve the type of work being offered.
